In the past four years, American automaker Chrysler has invested over $3.2 billion into U.S. manufacturing facilities and has reaped the benefits by being in a sounder financial position than ever before. To continue to promote this success, the brand has made an additional $350 million investment to build a brand new paint plant in Sterling Heights, MI.

This new 425,000-sqaure-foot facility will be right next to the current Chrysler assembly plant and at the present time is 85 percent complete. This plant signifies a large rebound for the brand which struggled during the recession and benefited from some assistance, provided by the Sterling Height City Council which helped Chrysler save millions of dollars in taxes by giving the brand a 50 percent tax break.

The paint plant will be the first that the automaker has built in over twenty years and is scheduled to commence operations in the next year. About 450 people will be employed at the plant to paint new Chrysler models with a three phase process that utilizes 112 spray-painting robots. The vehicles will first receive their base coat and then a micro coat is before the clear coat is applied.

The brand has been tight-lipped about exactly which new models will be receiving their paint jobs at the new facility but it is interesting to note that the assembly plant next door manufactures the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200.
